At the start of the first episode of THE PROMISED NEVERLAND, two young boys and one young girl are discussing what life would be outside of this gate. Their mom has never let them passed this point before. What are they being protected from, and what is on the other side?
The young boys and girl live in a nice looking house in the middle of a forest.
And it’s not just a house, but a bordering house for orphans!
The girl’s name is Emma, the white-haired boy is named Norman, and the dark-haired boy is Ray.
All of the orphans really love their “mom.”
Each orphan has a number tattooed to their neck.
The orphans regularly take tests where they scan barcodes. Most boys and girls don’t score that high, but Norman, Ray and Emma all get perfect scores. Jealous, the other kids challenge Norman to a game of tag.
Emma is the last one not tagged. But thanks to Norman’s ability to strategize, he catches her.
The kids are not done, yet. This time they want everyone to be “it” and try to catch Norman.
Emma finds Norman staring at a low, harmless-looking fence. This fence surrounds the orphanage’s compound, but they are not allowed to cross it, per mom’s orders.
The other kids talk about how no one that leaves the orphanage ever writes back to them? Why not, they’re practically closer than family, right?
That night is Conny’s last day in the orphanage. She promises to write to everyone and to grow up to be an adult just like mom.
Mom escorts Conny through the fence.
Oh no! Conny forgot her cherished bunny doll. Norman and Emma agree to give it to her before she leaves. They run to the gate, and agree that giving Conny back her bunny is worth their inevitable scolding from mom.
Emma looks into the back of a truck that is in the driveway. She’s petrified and speechless.
Norman looks too.
Emma is dead, stabbed by a flower stem 😦 What happened, who did this?!
They hear someone coming, they dash under the truck.
A giant monster drops a vase with a human in it. What is going on! There’s multiple monsters, and mom is there too!
They smell something peculiar. One of the monsters looks under the truck.
Thankfully, Norman and Emma make it away. The monster, and mom, find the bunny.
They don’t tell Ray about it, but try to calm themselves together.
Their orphanage is actually a farm, and they’re the meat.
